SUSTAINABLE FUTURES SUMMIT

MERIDAN STATE COLLEGE QLD.

Recently, I had the privilege of participating in a Sustainable Futures Summit hosted by Meridan State College, through their Sustainable Futures and Emerging Technologies Education Centre (SFET) on the Sunshine Coast Qld.  It was a motivational and illuminating gathering where educators and innovators converged to develop a greater understanding of Sustainability as a cross-curriculum priority in the Australian Curriculum.  Professional networking sessions enabled emerging ideas to germinate and supported the growth of collective action and collaborative innovation.  The highlight of my day was speaking to people passionate about implementing sustainability across their curricula and learning about the many ways they achieve this goal.   

Eternal World is honoured to work collaboratively with Meridan State College to deliver the following two workshops during the MSC Festival of Learning in June 2024.

Demystifying Sustainability

This combined professional development workshop for teachers and the wider community is designed to unravel the mystery of sustainability.

It has been developed to assist participants in understanding the nuances of sustainability and the complexity of change required in all aspects of our personal, work and social lives.

Practical activities, specific to individual participant needs and their level of understanding about sustainability will be provided.

Level up your sustainability knowledge and home gardening skills at this workshop led by sustainability guru Dr Kim Polistina, Eternal World Pty. Ltd.

In this informative and fun-filled workshop you will:

  • Develop your skills and knowledge in general produce home gardening.

This week’s Local Sustainability Heroes – Backyards for Biodiversity

People often comment that sustainability is too hard to achieve, too difficult to understand, too overwhelming.  Backyards for Biodiversity SEQ, based in the beautiful Sunshine Coast region of south-east Queensland is one organisation working hard to disprove these myths. 

They hold true to their mission to bring nature back to our towns and suburbs.  Promoting the importance and potential of urban areas for biodiversity by improving and expanding native biodiversity and habitats – rewilding and transforming one backyard at a time.

Celebrating this week’s Local Sustainability Heroes – Judge Little Love Lots

The recent International Women’s Day commemorated women around the world. Many local groups are at the forefront of helping gender equality become a reality across the globe. One such charitable organisation is Judge Little Love Lots. Through their ‘The Gift’ program they are helping women and girls regain their confidence and control of their lives.

Their ‘Restore their Confidence’ project provides girls in Tanzania with sanitary napkins, enabling them to attend school and reduce their need to be absent from school as a result of not being able to afford these basic human needs and rights.

Their ‘S.T.E.M.M.’ project allows young mothers in Australia to engage in learning pathways leading them to certified outcomes. The girls develop life skills, parenting, self-worth, healthy relationships, pre and post-birth plans as well as physical and emotional well-being in a safe, non-judgmental environment.

Working towards achieving SDG 17 Partnerships – Connecting Sustainable Minds

Absolutely love being inspired by people like Jen Gearing and the work she is doing with Boomerang Alliance on plastic reduction proves that small changes can make big waves of social change toward a sustainable world. Local Sustainability Heros – Timple and Tamper

Thanks to Timple and Tamper for proving it does not take a lot of effort to make our daily actions and behaviours sustainable. 

Timple and Tamper (https://www.tippleandtamper.com.au/) set up their reusable cup station at the recent Clean-Up for Turtle Hatchlings event.  This is a simple, easy, and effective way to reduce the number of single-use cups and plastic lids that end up in landfills and natural areas.  In this instance, the oceans where vulnerable turtle hatchlings will struggle to swim through the debris, or worse, consume small plastic particles thinking they are food. 

Children and Turtles

It warms my heart to see children caring for the environment and other species.  The girls worked hard on the recent Clean-up for Turtle Hatchlings event to collect rubbish from our local beach. This event aims to remove as much marine debris from our beaches to give our loggerhead turtle hatchlings the safest journey to the ocean possible!  From 2016 to 2021 this clean-up programme has collected 550,000 pieces of litter and over 13 tonnes of rubbish (Sunshine Coast Council, 2024).  Search your local council or environmental groups’ websites for more details of events in your area.
