Citizen Science at its Best

🌱 I’m always humbled by the depth of insight shared during our Community Sustainability Frameworks™ (CSF) workshops. Local voices bring unmatched knowledge of environmental, social, cultural, and economic challenges — it’s citizen science in action and the heartbeat of real change. towards a sustainable future.  💚

At our recent workshop, participants highlighted how disconnected systems often prevent sustainable outcomes. With guidance from Dr. Polistina, we used systems thinking to identify local gaps and explored global frameworks to help bridge them through the identification of opportunities for change.

Local Sustainability Heroes – Orange Sky

Orange Sky Australia is the world’s first free mobile laundry service. It is dedicated to supporting people experiencing homelessness or doing it tough. The service began in 2014 from a garage in suburban Brisbane. It now operates in 64 locations around Australia and 6 in New Zealand.

Warm showers, clean laundry and community acceptance and inclusion are some of our basic physiological and social human needs. Too often, these needs are inaccessible. Those experiencing homelessness or going through hardship often face this issue.

Orange Sky provides a supportive, welcoming, and inclusive space. It is for people experiencing loneliness or disconnection from the community. They can access free laundry, warm showers, and genuine conversation. In doing so, they implement social sustainability. This promotes good health and well-being. It fosters social inclusion. It also celebrates human rights and dignity.

Eternal World applauds the tireless work of those at Orange Sky. They make our society and culture more just. They also make it more sustainable and kind.

Community Sustainability Frameworks Workshop – Lismore

It is always inspiring to spend time with people who are motivated and passionate about re/building their communities to be more sustainable.

Participants at our recent Community Sustainability Frameworks (CSFs) workshop were one such group. Our afternoon was spent at the beautiful and historic Northern Rivers Conservatorium in Lismore. The group discussed the role of CSFs in sustainable re/development of the Northern Rivers region.

Sustainability values and overarching domains, sustainable urban designs and what is required from the entire community, and beyond, to implement and maintain sustainable communities were discussed. Current global to local examples of communities and governments changing towards sustainability were showcased. This provided the opportunity for participants to analyse possibilities for re/development in the Northern Rivers region and their own communities.

The workshop finished with a sustainability mapping exercise. Ideas emerged around permaculture and home ownership. There was discussion about decent pay and work, along with challenging the status quo of housing development models. Other topics included sustainable transport, resilient community spaces, especially emergency evacuation sites. Renewable energy and opportunities for human/non-human interaction in thriving habitats were also considered, among many more.
